HOMETOWN COUNTRYSIDE CONNECTION TUTORIAL
-
First check to see how familiar the participant is with Internet. Otherwise
might have to start with basic navigation skills, too.
-
I ask how familiar they are with webpages.
-
Do they have favorites or do they URL addresses that they want to link
to....
(This is to get them familiar with how a website is laid out...
What they might want on their site and such.)
-
We will identify each part of a website.
-
Top line...(bookmark line)
-
Backgrounds/text/images
-
Headings
-
Lists
-
Other items
-
Then I ask what and where they think their site would be logically linked
to our website.
-
Churches
-
Local organizations
-
Schools
-
etc.
-
We set up or create a Directory page for their organization. Create a link
back to main community page.
-
Choose an appropriate template...(usually as part of #2--I will show what
kinds of templates there are.)
-
After their website page is created then we start manipulating the HCC
editing program...
-
Starting with top line (bookmark line, explaining that this is the info
that will come up on bookmarks or subjects that the search engines will
look for when doing a search
-
Generally speaking we do skip the background block and text til we have
some test up, then... I show them what backgrounds are in the HCC archives...if
they don't choose these... I explain about uploading from other Internet
free background sites.
-
Also show them image applications(same as backgrounds...in archives then
other sites) or scanned materials, if they bring in items.
-
We will upload at least one image or background to show application process.
-
If links are wanted to other sites (& I encourage them to use them).
I show this application and formula. Also explain where the formula is
in the template if they forget.
-
Sometimes in the application process I explain it is a learning experience
if you make a mistake the program will generally show you where the mistake
is i.e.,
-
forgot to add these
-
tags for instructions
-
Encourage participants to include
-
date of last update
-
putting links back to original site main page and main community page
-
use of calendar
-
use of guestbook
-
Ask for further questions. If they ask or have time and are not overwhelmed
I will mention the html tags for italics, bold, color. (Generally this
is saved for another time...but I refer them to the Manual.)
-
Tell them if they have no further questions...to try and use as soon as
possible to reinforce the program. And to call, email or come in person
and I will help them by mentoring them further.
