Glossary

access privileges -- 1. the right to use the HCC Manager Program. The Site Manager must enter the manager's personal information and issue a password to grant access privileges.
2. the permission to make changes to a web page or directory; assigned by the Site or Directory Manger [See Section 4, Section 7 and Section 8]

authorization window -- a window requesting a user name and password. The window appears when first entering an HCC session or when switching to a different manager. [See Section 4]

block -- sections of a web page to which specific formatting has been applied within HCC's page edit screen (e.g.,. text blocks, list blocks, or heading blocks) [See Section 5]

directory -- part of a hierarchical file system. Gives the illusion of compartments or folders in which documents and subdirectories are stored. The ability to group related web documents within a directory is an useful HCC organizational method.

document -- 1. any text, data, or graphics file created on the computer
2. any WWW file containing text, graphics or hyperlinks that can be viewed with a web browser

email -- electronically transmitted message. Usually sent through the Internet

end image wrap -- a special HCC command that prevents the information following the end image wrap from wrapping around an image [See Section 5.11]

functions -- within the HCC Manager Program, the options controlled by a Manager. Different functions are available to different levels of Managers.

gif -- an computer image format that can be displayed by a web browser. gif is the format of choice for line drawings, logos and images that use few colors or have large areas of the same color. [See also the glossary term jpg.]

transparent gif -- a special gif file format that makes the background color of the image appear to be transparent. When used in a web page, the background of the image is replaced by the background of the web page.

Graphics Archive -- the library of images available within the HCC Manager Program [See Section 6.2]

Graphics Tester -- part of the HCC Manager Program used to test the effects and interactions of graphic images and color schemes. [See Section 6.3]

HTML -- the acronym for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is a special programming language consisting of tags embedded in a WWW document. HTML controls the appearance and structure of a WWW document. The HTML is interpreted and displayed by web browser software. HTML allows different browsers (e.g., Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) used on different computer operating systems (e.g. Windows 95, Macintosh, or UNIX) to display the same document in a similar manner. The HCC Manager Program helps Managers create WWW documents without the need to learn HTML.

Internet -- global computer network consisting of millions of computers that exchange information

jpg/jpeg -- an image file format that can be displayed by a web browser. The format of choice for photos. [See also glossary term gif.]

Manager Mode -- the interactive mode of the HCC Manager Program. Allows managers to change their web sites.

Manager -- a user who has access privileges to the HCC Manager Program, is allowed to make changes to and is responsible for some aspect of the web site

Manager list -- a list of everyone who has been entered as a Manager by the Site Manager. Page and Directory Managers can be selected from this list by the Site Manager. [See Section 8.1]

subdirectory -- a directory subordinate to another directory ("inside" or "beneath" another directory). To gain access to the subdirectory, the address requested must include all directories above the subdirectory. [See also glossary term directory.]

link/hypertext link -- text or image within a web document that points to another web document. A web browser often displays a link in some particular way (e.g. a different color or underlined). Clicking on the link activates it. Activating the link makes the web browser display the web document at the address pointed to by the link. [See Appendix G]

URL -- term for Internet addresses, including web addresses. An acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. An example: http://www.hccweb.com/ [See Appendix B for more information]

web browser --a computer program that displays web pages. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are examples of web browsers.

web page -- see document

web site -- a collection of web documents. A web site is identified and accessed by a unique name. Documents at a single web site usually contain information on a specific topic or related topics.

WWW -- acronym for World Wide Web. The Web is an information source of millions of documents housed on millions of computers accessible through the Internet computer network.

xxLINKxx -- a special HCC code used to create links [See Appendix G]
