HCC is a community information network designed by librarians in the Alliance Library System and by Infobahn Outfitters. 45 libraries in central and western Illinois are participating in HCC (see list below).
Community information networks are electronic information systems established and maintained by community members and organizations. The primary purpose of community information networks is to provide area citizens and organizations with timely and inexpensive access to a variety of local and regional information. Because HCC will be a part of the World Wide Web on the Internet, information will also be accessible to others throughout Illinois, the United States and the world.
HCC needs your help! Community groups and individuals are encouraged to participate. Your local library will coordinate volunteers to enter and maintain the information for organizations. For example, if you belong to the Lions Club, your group is encouraged to enter and update information about your projects and special events through HCC.
No. You may use the computer at the library. You may also use any other computer which provides a connection to the World Wide Web.
If you can use a typewriter (hunt-n-peck method is fine!) or a computer, you can easily learn to work with HCC. Because the HCC system uses web forms to create and update web pages, you do not need to know the HTML language or anything about writing web pages.
No. There are no fees or charges for volunteering.
HCC is in the development stages, so the amount of information currently available is small. You may access HCC through any Internet connection which provides access to the World Wide Web. You may use your own connection to the Internet, if you have one. The participating libraries are also providing an access point at each library. The web address of HCC is: http://www.hccweb.com/
While complete World Wide Web sites for businesses cannot be part of HCC, communities may choose to maintain lists of local businesses. Communities may choose to provide links to existing web sites of local businesses. Communities may also choose to offer sponsorship opportunities to support the cost of the library's participation in HCC. The policies regarding businesses and HCC are under development. Your library can provide details as they become available.
Just like your group's web site is a part of the World Wide Web, HCC is also a part of the World Wide Web. In the same way your group's web site has links to other web sites, links can be made from HCC to your group's existing web site.
